If your family has a history of Down syndrome and wish to have a baby, experts recommend genetic counseling.
There is an increased risk of having a second child with Down syndrome if a couple has already had one with the condition.
As a woman ages her risk of having a baby with Down syndrome increases as she ages. This risk is significantly higher after the age of 35.
Tests that can be done during the first few months to check for Down syndrome:
- Nuchal translucency ultrasound
- Chronic villus sampling
